Landfills — Grafton State Hospital Former Disposal Area Closure
GRAFTON / SHREWSBURY, MA — T Ford Company, Inc. (TFCI) was the general contractor for the closure of an abandoned disposal area at the Grafton State Hospital. The project involved clearing and regrading the one and one-half acre disposal area on the existing slopes that were 1:1 to 1.5:1. TFCI installed slope stabilization material to prepare the subgrade to achieve 2:1 slopes and a combination of geosynthetic clay liner, geocomposite, eight-inch geocellular confinement system, and various soil layers were installed to ensure slope stability. The project was further complicated by the presence of an adjacent wetland where a significant amount of solid waste had accumulated over the years. TFCI built a swamp mat road into the wetland and excavated and then consolidated the solid waste within the landfill footprint. To restore the original wetland perimeter, TFCI also installed a 300 linear foot, ten foot high, stepped gabion retaining wall at the base of the slope and performed associated wetland restoration activities.
